CHRIST COMMUNITY, Fla.
— A Christian chapel is being installed on top of a chapel that was damaged in a fire and was saved by the kindness of its patrons.
Christ Community Lutheran Church in Christ Community is located in the town of St. Johns in Broward County, Fla., about 50 miles northwest of Miami.
It’s one of the largest congregations of evangelicals in the United States, with about 1,400 members.
The fire broke out Monday morning inside the St. John Baptist Church.
It began when a sprinkler system malfunctioned, causing the church’s pastor, John M. Wertheimer, to lose control of the fire and cause it to spread to the other side of the building.
Wertheimer was rescued by a firefighter, who then got a phone call from an elderly man in the area who said he had just heard the fire had been brought to the church.
The man told the rescuers that the fire was coming from the top of the church, which was where the sprinkler had been placed.
He then told the firefighters to go inside to find the culprits.
Wirtheimer said in a Facebook post that the church will have its new roof installed.
He said he hoped that will help bring peace to the neighborhood.
