A church in southwestern Ohio turned deadly mass killing into a national trending topic.
The pastor of a church at the corner of Oak Lawn and Lake Road was arrested and charged with murdering five people and injuring dozens more, including a woman whose body was found by firefighters, police said.
The Rev. Matthew Burdick was in custody Sunday and is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court in Cincinnati on a charge of aiding and abetting a crime against humanity, police and court records show.
Burdick, 51, who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri, was arrested at his church Sunday morning, police Sgt. Matthew Healy said.
He was in stable condition Sunday night at a hospital.
According to court documents, Burdock was at a Bible study at the church with two other people in a parking lot on Sunday morning when the shooting erupted.
“A suspect exited the car and opened fire with a rifle and multiple rounds into the congregation,” according to a police affidavit.
Officers responded to a call at the scene at 1:45 p.m. and found the woman’s body in a pool of blood and a pile of debris in the parking lot.
One of the victims was shot in the head and the other was shot twice in the stomach.
Two other people were shot in their buttocks.
A man and woman were treated for their injuries at the hospital, police reported.
The man suffered a graze wound to the right side of his face, the woman in the center of the scene was treated for a grazi wound to her right knee, and the man in the front seat suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand.
The woman in front of them was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police did not provide additional information.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the other victims, who were all married men.
